And of course, within a month after publication, all the arguments about gendered clothing will fade and neutral clothing for babies and toddlers will once more be abundant.

oh thank goodness! i've been driving amazon.uk nuts chasing your book, and they've at last updated properly so i can order: looking forward to it. was shocked at a dinner of fashion sophisticates in notting hill last night, one of them entirely old enough to remember the 1980s marketing of boy blue and girly pink, that they all took it for granted that gender binary had been immutable forever. WHAT? Fascinating, Veronica! I have done only a tiny bit of work on the naming and uses of the color "pink", but it is clear that it has undergone some amazing transformations in hue and symbolism. Dominique, Grisard, referenced in a more recent post, has done quite a bit -- it was in a draft of her paper given in Boston, but most of it didn't make the final version. The "salmony" tint makes sense -- one of the earliest meanings for "pink" was a young salmon. Comments are closed.
